The painting is complete, and the horse continues to improve. We still don’t know what happened to Spirit out there in the pasture, but we do have a hunch now. A likely scenario is that he tied up (a type of muscular paralysis of the hindquarters–happened twice to my Billy) and then got into trouble when he went down for whatever reason and then couldn’t get up. May have pinched a nerve or something in the struggle. Anyhow, his recovery is coming along and our barn manager put out a call on GoFundMe for help for the family and succeeded in raising several hundred dollars for the vet bills. The family is overwhelmed by the care, concern and help given by friends and fellow boarders. And I hope Dakota’s grandmother loves this portrait. It was a challenge for me because the source photo wasn’t the most “in-focus” picture I’ve ever had to work with. But I always do the best I can with what I have, and I think this one is a winner.
Charm, showing off the only braids that will stay in her endless mane.

For not the first time, but maybe the last time, I have started a "home business". The difference with this one is that it is one I really enjoy. I've drawn and painted horses since I was (at least) five years old--that's the earliest one that my mother saved.By the time I entered my teens, Mother had grown a bit tired of the subject and urged me to do something else with my artwork besides horses. I followed her advice and never looked back until ten years ago when it occurred to me that people might actually pay for horse portraits. I have had many exhibits of my landscapes, and sold a good number of them--but not enough to provide any kind of steady income.
I'm hoping that if I work hard and market this business well I will be able to delight my customers, make some money, and have a lot of fun doing it.
