I “finished” this a few days ago, but propped it up so I could evaluate it and decide if it was truly finished. I still haven’t decided, so I thought I would just publish it anyway since whatever revisions I might make would most likely be too subtle to show up in a photograph. So enjoy–I’m pretty pleased with it as is and should probably pick up my paint brushes and move on!
Charm, showing off the only braids that will stay in her endless mane.

For not the first time, but maybe the last time, I have started a "home business". The difference with this one is that it is one I really enjoy. I've drawn and painted horses since I was (at least) five years old--that's the earliest one that my mother saved.By the time I entered my teens, Mother had grown a bit tired of the subject and urged me to do something else with my artwork besides horses. I followed her advice and never looked back until ten years ago when it occurred to me that people might actually pay for horse portraits. I have had many exhibits of my landscapes, and sold a good number of them--but not enough to provide any kind of steady income.
I'm hoping that if I work hard and market this business well I will be able to delight my customers, make some money, and have a lot of fun doing it.

i was especially impressed by your astute use of focus, rendering as it did the background fuzzy, just like a photo.

Well, actually, it does look like that in the original photo. The background, for once, turned out to be something that I could portray directly without having to create missing pieces.

Deciding when a work is finished is not an easy task for an artist. there’s always something that may need a little more work, but then ya run the risk of re-ding the whole painting. Whatever you decide, so far so good.

The final result – even if it ends up being not quite final – is really lovely. It’s a beautiful portrait of Cantana.

Thanks Otto–I did decide to leave it “as is”. I’m happy with it and wasn’t particularly looking forward to fussing with it. When I go too far with something it usually takes a turn for the worse!
