For not the first time, but maybe the last time, I have started a "home business". The difference with this one is that it is one I really enjoy. I've drawn and painted horses since I was (at least) five years old--that's the earliest one that my mother saved.By the time I entered my teens, Mother had grown a bit tired of the subject and urged me to do something else with my artwork besides horses. I followed her advice and never looked back until ten years ago when it occurred to me that people might actually pay for horse portraits. I have had many exhibits of my landscapes, and sold a good number of them--but not enough to provide any kind of steady income.
I'm hoping that if I work hard and market this business well I will be able to delight my customers, make some money, and have a lot of fun doing it.

Climbing the hill
This one is testing my confidence a bit. As we make our way together towards the upper right hand corner I keep wondering why the paint is not applying itself as smoothly as it usually does (yeah, show me paint … Continue reading
An old dog learns new tricks (a photo-free post)
So I went to this seminar on Saturday about how to increase your sales at an art fair. I knew I didn’t know everything, but I didn’t know there were some rather obvious things I should have known. Don’t want … Continue reading
Revelation
For the first time ever I experimented with painting while tending my booth. I have always done the ink drawings but thought painting would be too messy and space-consuming. I discovered, however, that I can take my tiny (about the … Continue reading
Perfect day for a horseshow at Harvard Milk Days
Perfect, that is, except for the sudden gusts of wind that threatened to blow everything away. Otherwise, sunny and pleasant. I thought I’d just make this post mostly a picture show, short and sweet. This was my third year at … Continue reading
Busy day at the West Michigan Winter Horse Fest
A long day. Up at 4AM for the 1-3/4 hour drive to Grand Rapids. Still dark when I got there, sat in the truck and ate my room-temp oatmeal which had been hot when I left the house with it. … Continue reading
Busy day in Kalamazoo
Just got back from the Kalamazoo County 4-H tack sale, an annual event attended by I don’t know how many people, but it seemed like a thousand. I had a really good afternoon/evening in my booth, with lots of people … Continue reading
Not quite ready for prime time
Longmeadow has another layer but it’s not quite there yet. Will delay posting until it’s done…probably around the middle of the coming week. Meanwhile, I’ve been cutting mats for my new ink drawings, and still have to make cute (!) … Continue reading
Just call me persistent
I was all set to start typing and for some reason found that there was a cat licking my arm. Said cat is now carefully watching every keyboard movement. Maybe spell-checking? The weekend’s marketing activities were long but encouraging. The … Continue reading
Surprise phone call
My phone rang yesterday while I was watching a friend take a riding lesson. It was quite sunny, so I couldn’t see the display and therefore couldn’t decide whether it was someone I knew or not (how shameful to admit … Continue reading
Harvard Milk Days Horse Show–So Much Fun!
Took my traveling horse portrait show to Harvard Milk Days today. A beautiful day for a horse show, or just being outdoors in general. Set up the tent in record time, then sat back to enjoy. Here’s the vendor row, … Continue reading
