For not the first time, but maybe the last time, I have started a "home business". The difference with this one is that it is one I really enjoy. I've drawn and painted horses since I was (at least) five years old--that's the earliest one that my mother saved.By the time I entered my teens, Mother had grown a bit tired of the subject and urged me to do something else with my artwork besides horses. I followed her advice and never looked back until ten years ago when it occurred to me that people might actually pay for horse portraits. I have had many exhibits of my landscapes, and sold a good number of them--but not enough to provide any kind of steady income.
I'm hoping that if I work hard and market this business well I will be able to delight my customers, make some money, and have a lot of fun doing it.

I have not been missing in action
It only seems like I have disappeared, but now that I have a painting, some sales, and an art fair out of the way, I can actually sit down a while and write something. I finished Sky Pads 36, but … Continue reading
The age of forgetfulness
In all the busy-ness of the last few weeks I totally forgot I was going to let you in on the (almost) 30-year saga of one of my early paintings. I did Echo Park XI in 1990 as part of … Continue reading
Weekend in a Chicago white tent
This was an art festival that I was determined to be a part of even though fate seemed to think otherwise after the windstorm the weekend before crushed some paintings and twisted some tent parts. Miraculously–or so it seemed–I was … Continue reading
Two days in a tent
The weather threatened to derail the outdoor Starving Artists Show in Highwood, Illinois this past weekend, but we got through it with one good day and one semi-soggy one. On Saturday it was sunshine in the morning, until this rolled … Continue reading
An old dog learns new tricks (a photo-free post)
So I went to this seminar on Saturday about how to increase your sales at an art fair. I knew I didn’t know everything, but I didn’t know there were some rather obvious things I should have known. Don’t want … Continue reading
News Brief
Yes, very briefly. First, Willow Tree (where I board Charm) lost another wonderful lesson horse recently. My trainer wanted to gift our barn manager with a remembrance of Dale, a Belgian draft who served not only as a lesson horse … Continue reading
Dogwood Festival Art Stroll
First things first! Red dots rule! This one sold before the Art Stroll even officially started on Thursday afternoon. Nothing beats an auspicious beginning… The event featured art works in stores all along Dowagiac’s main street, known as Front Street. … Continue reading
You win some, you lose some
Preliminary results are in from Harbor Shores– News from Harbor Shores, a couple of sales and a nice artist’s reception! The crowd was really great, and I truly love talking to people who want to know about my art. I … Continue reading
SOLD!! Woo-hoo!!
This is the painting that was accepted into the Box Factory for the Arts annual Michiana Area Art Contest. It didn’t win any “awards”, but this one sold! That’s the biggest validation I could expect from a competition/show. I’m happy … Continue reading
This year’s dose of dressage at Willow Tree
Today marked the inauguration of my brand new exhibit booth– There are several big differences between this one and the old one, even though at first glance they look awfully similar. This has a very solid round steel bar frame, … Continue reading
