For not the first time, but maybe the last time, I have started a "home business". The difference with this one is that it is one I really enjoy. I've drawn and painted horses since I was (at least) five years old--that's the earliest one that my mother saved.By the time I entered my teens, Mother had grown a bit tired of the subject and urged me to do something else with my artwork besides horses. I followed her advice and never looked back until ten years ago when it occurred to me that people might actually pay for horse portraits. I have had many exhibits of my landscapes, and sold a good number of them--but not enough to provide any kind of steady income.
I'm hoping that if I work hard and market this business well I will be able to delight my customers, make some money, and have a lot of fun doing it.

Not diving any deeper, but getting pretty thick
These last two layers started with a coat of blue paint, but not just any blue. I have a favorite mix of green and magenta that produces my favorite blue. I know, you’re saying that combination can’t possibly make blue. … Continue reading
Now what??!!
OK, so does this look like mud or what? It just goes to show that no matter what you do, the paint seems to have the last word. This is my usual preliminary wash, this time for Sky Pads 22. … Continue reading
“I’m Lovin’ it” (not Mickey D’s)
This image is pretty close to reality. It always helps to be able to photograph in some good light. I mentioned earlier that I would post Sky Pads 17 side by side with this one so you can see … Continue reading
21 taking shape
This is basically how the painting will look. It won’t change much from here except to enhance the values between lights and darks. No new colors, just a bit more drama. Probably one more pass. Oh wait, yesterday I … Continue reading
21, but only drinking pond water
There was one warm-ish day a week or so ago, and I took advantage of it. Normally I pour paint washes on a really hot day, around 90F so that the pigment will pull together as the paint thinner … Continue reading
A little bit of last night’s fun
It would have been a great time even if wine hadn’t been involved, but in this case the wine also happened to be pretty good. A few scenes from my reception for the Sky Pads exhibit last night at the … Continue reading
Attitude
I thought the last pair of draft horses in harness that I painted were incredibly complicated (see them here) and felt like it took an eternity to paint them. The new pair, part of a four-horse hitch at the Michigan … Continue reading
